About this artwork

This is the “Untitled (Pink Bosoms)” by Kiki Smith, created in 1990. The work is a set of four screenprints printed on handmade Nepalese rice paper, with added black gouache. In each sheet a woman’s hands squeeze milk out of her breasts, the milk rendered in a cartoon‑like splash of drops that seem to leap in different directions. The magenta‑tinted paper gives the milk a blood‑stained look, playing on the tension between nourishment and the visceral symbolism of blood.

Smith chose rice paper because its skin‑like texture allowed her to explore the body both figuratively and materially. The print is part of an edition of sixteen – this particular copy is number 7 – and it arrived in 2023 as part of the D. Daskalopoulos Collection Gift. The piece was on view at the Athens Conservatoire in 2016–17 and sits in the Tate Modern’s “Performer and Participant: On Domesticity” display.
