About this artwork

This is “Untitled” by Peter Doig. Painted in 2008, it’s an oil on paper work measuring 252 by 328 millimetres. The piece sits in a small, intimate space where you can see how Doig plays with texture and gesture. Though titled simply, the work hints at everyday scenes – a table tennis table, a wall, a bat – layered with a quiet sense of adults and leisure. Doig’s use of light and shadow gives the surfaces a dreamlike quality that invites viewers to look closer. The work was presented by the artist in 2013 and has been part of recent shows, including the “Painting the Figure in the 21st Century” display in the studio. Its scale and medium let the brushwork stand out, making each stroke feel deliberate yet spontaneous.
