About this artwork

This is the Untitled (Self with Little Fur) by Birgit Jürgenssen. A 1974 colour photograph, re‑printed in 2011 under the artist’s estate. In the image the artist leans against a light wall, her lips pursed, eyes and nose hidden behind a fox’s face taken from a fur stole. She wears a turquoise wool poncho with dark pattern. The fur functions as a mask, merging with her hair to turn her into a fox‑woman, hinting at animalistic sides of humanity and flirtation with the glamour of early Hollywood fur fashion. The work echoes surrealists like Meret Oppenheim and invites reflection on identity, femininity and the hidden animal instinct in us all.
