About this artwork
This is the “Johnathan & Kim, London” by Sunil Gupta. It’s a black‑and‑white portrait of a gay couple photographed in their own living room, a quiet, domestic setting that recalls a traditional family portrait. The image comes from Gupta’s series *Lovers: Ten Years On*, shot between 1984 and 1986 after the artist’s own ten‑year relationship had ended.
The series aimed to document long‑term gay relationships that were otherwise invisible in mainstream media. While the 1980s were a time of harsh, often sensational coverage of HIV and AIDS, these portraits present Johnathan and Kim as an ordinary, middle‑class couple: professional, affectionate, and simply living together. The couple’s embrace, the familiarity of their surroundings, and the direct gaze all suggest a normal, everyday life that was, in many ways, under threat.
Gupta’s choice of a domestic interior and a familiar pose was a quiet act of resistance, showing that queer love could be ordinary, dignified, and enduring. Many of the couples photographed in the series later lost their lives to HIV/AIDS, adding a poignant layer of loss to these images.
The work is an inkjet print on paper, originally created in 1985 and reprinted in 2018 as part of the Tate collection.
