About this artwork
This is the Emmanuel & David, London photograph by Sunil Gupta. The image was captured in 1984 as part of his series Lovers: Ten Years On, a collection of over thirty black‑and‑white portraits of gay couples he met in London and Newcastle. The shot shows Emmanuel and David standing close, sharing a gentle embrace in a tidy living room, the sort of pose that mimics the formal family portraits of the era. The intimacy is understated, yet it speaks loudly against the prevailing narrative of the 1980s that framed same‑sex love as deviant, especially amid the fear and stigma surrounding HIV and AIDS. Gupta deliberately framed these couples as ordinary middle‑class professionals, grounding queer affection in everyday domesticity. Many of the men photographed later succumbed to AIDS, adding a tragic poignancy to the images.
Gupta, a South‑Asian artist working in the UK, used documentary photography to challenge social norms. He began shooting after his own decade‑long relationship ended, aiming to record the evolving attitudes toward gay life. The series was only fully exhibited once, in 1984, and the work has recently been printed on paper in 2018. Its inclusion in a collection today reminds us that, even when society tried to marginalise queer love, there were still quiet moments of acceptance and human connection captured in black and white.
