About this artwork
This is the “Guy & Brian, London” by Sunil Gupta. It comes from his series *Lovers: Ten Years On*, a collection of more than thirty black‑and‑white portraits taken between 1984 and 1986. Gupta began the series after the end of his own ten‑year partnership, and he set out to document the everyday lives of gay couples in London’s social circles.
The photograph shows the couple seated together in a modest living room, looking directly at the camera in a pose that echoes traditional family portraits. Their affection is understated, and the scene is framed by ordinary domestic objects—a kitchen appliance, a book—highlighting how normal these relationships were.
In the context of the 1980s, when HIV and AIDS were sensationalised and queer love was framed as deviant, Gupta’s images offered a counter‑narrative. The couples appear as middle‑class professionals, a stark contrast to the negative media coverage of the time. Tragically, many of the men in the series would later succumb to the epidemic.
The image is an inkjet print on paper, shot in black and white. It was originally taken in 1984 and printed again in 2018 as part of a new acquisition. The print measures about 500 mm by 330 mm. This work stands as a quiet but powerful social document, blending documentary precision with an intimate glimpse into queer life during a fraught decade.
