About this artwork

This is the artwork “In the Cloud” by Richard Long, created in 1991 as a screenprint on board. The piece is a large framed text work on off‑white paper. The title words “IN THE CLOUD” appear in bold red capital letters, set in Gill Sans. Below them, in black capitals, the artist records a concise itinerary: “Along an 8‑day walk across Scotland,” “¾ hour in cloud,” “While going over Ben Macdui, the highest point of the walk,” and “Coast to coast west to east 1991.”

Long used this format to capture the entire experience of a walk. The text describes the moment he reached the summit of Ben Macdui in the Cairngorms, noting how much time he spent enveloped in cloud. It shows his preference for words over images, allowing the idea of the journey to be fully expressed. This work is part of the ARTIST ROOMS collection, a key series that highlights Long’s practice of turning walking into visual language.
