About this artwork
This is the "Gardening" by Natalia Goncharova, painted in 1908. It’s an oil on canvas, about forty‑one by fifty inches, and the surface bursts with a decorative, stylised rhythm. Goncharova, a pioneer of Russian avant‑garde, was fascinated by folk art and the icons of her homeland. Instead of looking to “primitive” art abroad, she celebrated the very indigenous culture that had shaped her life.
The scene shows women working the garden in a rural estate in the Kaluga district, a place that gave her a glimpse of peasant life she later painted often. It’s almost autobiographical—she said she would never sell this because it captured the happiest summers she spent there.
On the back you can see her initials, “N.G.”, and a note that reads “Spring: Gardening,” a reminder of the season and the joy she felt while tending the plot. The composition captures movement, bending, and the simple dignity of ordinary labor, all wrapped in the bright, almost icon‑like palette that made her work instantly recognisable.
