About this artwork

This is a platinum print titled “J. Lambert,” created by Sir John Benjamin Stone in August 1903. It captures the policeman standing near the members’ entrance of the House of Commons, his uniform crisp against the stone archways that frame him. The image size is about 8 by 6.1 inches, so you can see fine details such as his cap and the brass buttons on his jacket. Stone, who also worked as a photographer and politician, photographed the scene while he was on duty; he produced around 1 436 portraits in total. The print now sits in the Photographs Collection of the National Portrait Gallery. In the early 1900s, the Metropolitan Police were tasked with keeping order inside Parliament, just before clashes began with suffragettes trying to enter the buildings.
