About this artwork

Here is a bronze bust by Peter Lambda of Dame Wendy Margaret Hiller, the celebrated actress whose career spanned many roles and who appeared in nineteen portraits. The sculpture was cast in 1997, drawing on an earlier 1950s design that captures her expressive face and relaxed shoulders. You’ll notice the smooth bronze surface, subtle contours of hair and cheekbones, and a calm gaze that hints at her stage presence. Lambda, born in Hungary, produced many theatrical portraits during the late 1940s and early 1950s—his casts of Aneurin Bevan, Christopher Fry, Lord Olivier and Kingsley Wood now also sit in the gallery’s collection. The bust measures about 16 × 17 3⁄8 inches (405 × 440 mm) and was purchased for the Primary Collection in 1997.
