About this artwork
This is a chromogenic print by Julian Broad, taken on 26 April 2000. The image measures about 17½ inches tall and 14 inches wide—roughly 44 cm by 36 cm—so you can see the full face and hands of Tracey Emin. She sits upright in a bathroom setting; you’ll notice the tiles, the white shower curtain, and the natural light that spills from the windows.
Julian Broad, who has photographed nineteen artists, captured this portrait while it was commissioned by British Vogue. The shot is intimate—like many of Emin’s own works—in which she plays with space and exposure to reveal her personality.
Tracey Emin first emerged in the 1990s as a Young British Artist. Her early pieces such as “Everyone I Have Ever Slept With” (1995) and “My Bed” (1998) earned her Turner Prize nomination and a place in Sensation at the Royal Academy. She became an Academician in 2007 and was honoured Dame in 2012.
