About this artwork

This is the Le Bec du Hoc, Grandcamp by Georges Seurat. Painted in 1885, this oil on canvas captures a breathtaking view of the Normandy coastline. You can see the rocky peak of Le Bec du Hoc rising up to the east, but what's interesting is that during the Second World War, this geological feature was greatly reduced due to bombardment.

Georges Seurat actually made an oil sketch on the spot in 1885, which served as a study for this painting. What's striking about this piece is how Seurat reworked it later, adding fine touches of paint and a painted border that subtly modulates the colours throughout.
