About this artwork

In this etching, “Henry Angelo as Mrs Cole in Foote’s ‘The Minor’,” we see the fencing master Henry Charles William Angelo posed in character. He wears a formal hat with an added flourish, its brim tipped down just enough to hint at a costume piece rather than everyday headwear. The lines are crisp, capturing the delicate folds of his jacket and the subtle sheen of his polished shoes.

The image was engraved by William Satchwell Leney (Lenney) after Samuel De Wilde’s original portrait and published by John Bell on 29 September 1792. It is currently a long‑term loan on display at The National Portrait Gallery, where you can appreciate the fine detail of this early nineteenth‑century print.
