About this artwork

In this oil on canvas portrait titled “Frederic Leighton, Baron Leighton”, painted in 1881 by George Frederic Watts, we see Frederic Leighton, Baron Leighton, dressed in his Royal Academy gown. He sits with his left elbow resting on the back of the chair, hands casually clasped in his lap. The canvas measures about 39 by 30 inches and shows a simple yet intimate scene; one can almost feel the two friends’ proximity—Watts’ house backed onto Leighton’s, where they met through a garden gate. After Leighton's death Watts remarked, “Half my life is gone with Leighton.”
