About this artwork

This is an albumen print from 24 July 1862, made by photographer Camille Silvy. It shows the Haitian consul François Jeanty in full court dress, his right hand resting on a small table as if he were presenting documents. The portrait’s background is a plain studio backdrop, but the fine lines of his lap coat and polished shoes bring him to life. He served as Haiti’s consul in London at a time when Britain had just recognised the new nation. In Silvy’s daybooks this image carries the number 10834, marking it among the many striking portraits he produced for clients.
