About this artwork
This is an electrotype cast from 1875 by Elkington & Co., produced by the sculptor Domenico Brucciani after an earlier work of around 1377. In front of you sits a full‑length effigy of Edward, Prince of Wales – son of King Edward III and known as “the Black Prince.” Notice his polished armor, the hat with ostrich feathers that echo the German motto *ich dien* (I serve). The statue captures the solidity of the original tomb carving in Canterbury Cathedral while adding a crisp 19th‑century finish.
This piece ties medieval iconography to Victorian printmaking, showing how earlier portraiture was reworked for new audiences.
