About this artwork
This is a bromide‑fibre print from 1977 by Neil Kenlock. The portrait frames Eddys Grant in profile, his face and shoulders centered against a plain backdrop. The fine paper carries subtle detail: the texture of his hair, the softness of his skin, and the quiet focus in his eyes.
Grant was born in 1948 and began his career with the UK’s first racially integrated pop group, the Equals. In the early 1980s he reached international fame with the platinum single “Electric Avenue”, a song that referenced the Brixton Riots of 1981. This print sits in our Photographs Collection; it was acquired by the gallery in 2003 and now lives as NPG x126197.
