About this artwork

This oval watercolor on vellum, just over two inches long, shows Dudley North, 4th Baron North, in full armor and a richly embroidered military sash. Notice the loose lock of hair he wears, a fashionable touch for the early 1620s. John Hoskins, an English miniaturist who bridged Elizabethan and Stuart styles, painted this small portrait while he was producing courtier images with fresh vigor. North had just been elected to Parliament and had fought in the Thirty‑Years War. The painting is part of the Primary Collection.
