About this artwork
This is a profile portrait of Dame Jane (Valerie) Goodall with Figan. The image captures Goodall's calm expression as she looks toward the viewer; her hair hangs loose in a simple style. Beside her sits Figan, a chimpanzee, its tail curled and eyes alert. The photo was taken on location at Gombe National Park in Tanzania, where Goodall carried out her pioneering field studies of chimp social life. Ken Regan photographed it circa 1989; the image is printed as a glossy bromide print, giving a subtle sheen to skin tones. Goodall later founded the Jane Goodall Institute and was named a United Nations Messenger of Peace.
