The image was captured by Lena Connell, who later became Beatrice Cundy, an accomplished photographer closely tied to the suffragette movement. It features Cicely Mary Hamilton (née Hammill), a writer and activist whose lyrics for “The March of the Women” gave the Women's Social and Political Union its anthem. She also staged the 1909 play *The Pageant of Great Women*, presenting over fifty historical figures in a court‑like tableau to champion women’s enfranchisement. The photograph was printed as postcards, helping raise funds and awareness for the cause.
