You see the pugilist’s face—sharp cheekbones, a narrow brimmed hat and sturdy gloves tucked in his jacket. The colours give depth to his linen shirt against a muted background. Bill Richmond (1763‑1829) was a celebrated English boxer who fought 50 bouts by 1800. This portrait is one of two that capture him for the National Portrait Gallery.
