About this artwork

This is the "Adoring Saints: Right Main Tier Panel" painted in the Italian north by Lorenzo Monaco. As part of a large multi-panelled altarpiece made for the Camaldolite monastery of San Benedetto fuori della Porta Pinti in Florence, this panel features an image from The Coronation of the Virgin. The saints depicted here would have been well known to the monks at San Benedetto.

At the front is Saint Romuald, founder of the Camaldolese Order, wearing the white habit of the Camaldolites. Next to him, dressed in yellow and blue and holding a large key, is Saint Peter, the first pope and founder of the Catholic Church. This panel was carefully structured to balance and echo those in the facing panel, giving the whole altarpiece an almost musical harmony.

The painting dates back to 1407-9 and is made from egg tempera on wood. It's one of many panels that form a larger polyptych, with parts also found in our collection and around the world.
