About this artwork
This is "A White House among Trees" painted in the Dutch tradition. The artist's style is reminiscent of Matthijs Maris, who studied in The Hague and Antwerp, but also worked in Paris from 1869 to 1877. However, this particular piece may be the work of a follower or imitator rather than Maris himself.
Notice how the white building, likely a farmhouse, doesn't quite evoke a sense of Dutch architecture. Instead, it's possible that we're looking at a scene in southern France or the Mediterranean. The painting itself is fairly crude with a limited range of colours used throughout.
The medium is oil on board, typical for this period. Despite its rough appearance, "A White House among Trees" gives us an impression of a building shaded by overhanging trees, and that's certainly something to appreciate about it.
