About this artwork
This is the A Regatta on the Grand Canal by Canaletto. Painted in the Italian north, this painting showcases one of Venice's most popular events - the annual regatta. The scene takes place on February 2nd, during the Feast of the Purification of the Virgin, and coincides with the Carnival.
We see a dynamic view of the Grand Canal as spectators watch from the Macchina della Regatta, temporary floating pavilions, and windows hung with colourful banners. The crowd's excitement is palpable as one-oared gondolas race up the middle of the canal, just right of centre two craft swing around the bend, trying to catch up with the leaders.
Notice how Canaletto has captured the drama of the event by placing spectators and architecture at a steep angle that recedes sharply into the distance. This sharp perspective focuses our eye on the racing boats. The ripples on the canal's surface may look sketchy close up but give depth and movement when viewed from a distance.
