About this artwork

This is "A Landscape with a High Dune and Peasants on a Road" painted in the Dutch north by Jan Wijnants. What we see here is probably not a specific location, but it's characteristic of the undulating fields and dunes between Wijnants' home town of Haarlem and the sea. He has likely adapted the view to give an impression of distance, placing elements like the stand of trees and the church to enhance that sense of depth.

The figures in the painting were added by Jan Lingelbach, who worked with Wijnants. Lingelbach's use of red and brown on their clothing makes them stand out against the landscape, leading our eye further into the scene. The silhouettes of two men and a dog on top of the dune add a moment of drama against the turbulent sky.

Painted in oil on canvas, this work is probably from around 1665.
